DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
Denying Congolese Workers the Right to Unionize:
G4S in the Democratic Republic of Congo
November 28, 2006--For more than three months, G4S has repeatedly dodged the Congolese union Sythac’s repeated attempts to meet to negotiate a recognition agreement. G4S workers have expressed interest in joining Sythac, which represents workers at other security companies, but G4S refuses to even meet with the union. G4S is the only multinational private security firm operating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is also, following its recent acquisition of the Congolese company Defence Systems Africa, the largest private security firm in the DRC.
