For the past couple of days I’ve been in Johannesburg as part of a delegation of trade unionists, lawyers, academics and human rights activists from the United States and Europe who are investigating the labor practices of the world’s second largest security firm, Group 4 Securicor (G4S), in southern Africa. G4S is Africa’s largest security firm. It currently employs over 80,000 workers in Africa and has been expanding rapidly in recent years.

I arrived in JoBurg yesterday from Washington, DC. On the drive from the airport to our hotel in Braamfontein, I was struck by the shear number of gated communities; the barbed wire, the signs advertising security systems. Incredible. And depressing. Its not my first visit to Joburg. I've been here numerous times. It's not that I didn't notice this before it's that my visit to Joburg is primarily to meet with security workers. So security is on mind.

Fact-Finding Mission to Visit Malawi April 18-20

Trade union leaders, academics, human rights attorneys and leaders of prominent British NGOs will visit with security workers employed by Group 4 Securicor in Malawi as part of a fact-finding mission to Southern Africa.

"We're concerned that Group 4 Securicor is a roadblock for Malawi guards who are struggling to lift their families out of poverty," said Christy Hoffman of UNI Property Services Global Union which helped organize the delegation.

A recent survey by University of Malawi Professor Thokozani James Ngwira paints a disturbing portrait of life for the 10,000 guards employed by Group 4 Securicor in Malawi.

SEIU International Vice President Gerry Hudson is leading a delegation that will meet with security workers in Southern Africa employed by Group 4 Securicor April 16–20. The security giant, whose U.S. affiliate also happens to be the largest security contractor employed by the U.S. government, is at the center of numerous controversies involving security workers in South Africa, Mozambique, and Malawi.

“There are disturbing parallels between what’s happening with Group 4 Securicor guards in Southern Africa and the United States,” said Hudson. “Our goal is to determine whether this company is merely indifferent or hostile to security workers rising out of poverty.”
